Materials Manager

Reporting into the Head of Operations you will be the Materials Manager for the business, ensuring best practice processes are developed. You will be responsible for applying, maintaining and improving lean manufacturing procedures, as well as play a lead role in developing processes whilst supporting the implementation of a new ERP solution.

As the Materials Manager your key responsibilities will include:
Manages the Master Production Schedule ensuring that an achievable plan is always in place that takes into consideration both materials and capacities.
Improve customer responsiveness by ensuring that appropriate demand solutions are found e.g. Forecasting/MPS/safety stocks
Develops implements and maintains policies, procedures and material control systems.
Ensures materials are ordered and in stock to meet customer requirements whilst maintaining optimum levels of inventory. Responsible for ensuring that ERP planning parameters are maintained in accordance with Company policy and that these parameters are reviewed to optimise operating costs and achieve customer satisfaction.
Drives analysis and evaluation of ERP data to ensure that material is optimised and financial performance improved.
Co-ordinates the efficient movement of materials by the most cost effective method
Develops and implements systems to improve material and information flows.
Ensure operational compliance with Company procedures and Quality requirements.
Identify and drive improvement initiative to reduce costs and improve on time delivery, work closely with other sites to share best practice and develop synergies.
Applies standard change control procedures and provides leadership in order to engage the team in continuously improving their performance.
As the Materials Manager your qualifications and experience should include:
Engineering/Manufacturing Degree or equivalent
Experience in a manufacturing/engineering capacity with solid experience, ideally within an Aerospace environment.
Experience of managing/leading a business unit or function either in a management or supervisory capacity.
Demonstrable experience of strategic input into a department and/or function.

Sound financial and commercial knowledge and some experience of managing budgets, allocating costs, forecasting.
Good level of report writing and adept with most IT packages.

You will be responsible for designing and implementing commodity strategies for complex product ranges so experience purchasing best cost and quality commodities in a complex engineering environment is needed. Maintaining programme objectives principally, Cost, Quality, Schedule and contractual commitments. You will also liaise with the Programme Sourcing Managers to implement best practice sourcing decisions for their programmes. As a Commodity Manager your key experience and responsibilities will include:
Responsible for defining and implementing Commodity strategies to deliver cost benefit to the business and ensure continuity of supply.

Our Client is a global engineering business based in the South West. Due to growth they are now looking for a Buying professional to join this successful business.

ROLE & SCOPE OF POSITION
Responsible to the Procurement Manager the Buyer is responsible for planning and controlling allocated inventories via purchase order activities to meet defined programmes.
The Buyer will typically manage a core portfolio of 20 suppliers on a weekly contact basis with a further 100 on a monthly-annual contact basis.
Supplier portfolio will be of a predominantly mechanical base.
Typical spend will be between £5-10m pa. in line with department procedures and company objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Work within the hierarchy of department and company controls, maintaining ISO procedures at all times.
Process Engineering releases and purchase parts and services on a timely basis.
Locate, develop and manage suppliers locally and globally and to monitor and evaluate supplier performance. Take action and keep colleagues informed as appropriate.
Negotiate appropriate purchase contracts in line with company procedures in order to minimise divisional risk; lower total costs; reduce lead times and improve quality standards whilst satisfying customer needs.
Ensure that planning and control of specified inventory is maintained and appropriate action and information flowed out as required.
Initiate and maintain commercial purchase agreements as directed and required.
Ensure that the position integrates with and serves all other functions in the division.
Maintain and monitor department databases and records such as lead times, prices, safety stocks as required.
Cover absent colleagues as directed as directed by the Procurement Manager.
PERSON REQUIREMENTS
Able to produce consistently accurate work and meet deadlines with a minimum of supervision.
Able to reason for and introduce then sustain change in the supply chain.
Tenacious but able to see the “bigger picture”.
Excellent interpersonal skills and able to express clearly both verbally and in writing with suppliers, Engineers, Assembly fitters and Stores personnel.
Willing to travel and stay away for short periods on company business as required.
TRAINING / BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE
Able to show relevant career progression with a minimum of 3yrs procurement experience in a relevant industry.
Experienced supplier negotiation, appraisal and management.
Experienced in both outward and inwardly facing supply chain management.
Able to organise and host supplier visits and meetings reporting as required.
Able to understand technical specifications and drawings.
Hold a minimum of level 4 CIPS qualification or equivalent.
Educated to A level standard and comfortable with I.T applications.
