FOOD MANUFACTURING
JOB TITLE: Group Buyer
Permanent
£36000 to £40000 per annum
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:
To take responsibility for all aspects of factory and production purchasing including: raw materials, packaging, utilities, and services supplied to manufacturing operations within the Group.
POSITION IN ORGANISATION:
" Reports to Group Purchasing Manager
" Liaises with factory Operations, QA, Technical, NPD, and Sales Departments and external suppliers
SCOPE OF JOB:
Negotiate all supply contracts including some group purchasing 40%
Responsible for raw materials and packaging purchasing budget 20%
Input into management, direction and work output of others with purchasing responsibilities.
Source, assist, and select suppliers ensuring minimum standards are achieved
Provide procurement evaluation and development information to other departments
DIMENSIONS & LIMITS OF AUTHORITY:
Operates within the group purchasing budget
Select and reject suppliers and negotiate contracts.
Responsibility for approx 20m of purchasing.
All supply contracts to be authorised via Group Purchasing Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Corporate member of CIPS an advantage
Degree level (food/packaging) with technical and auditing experience
EXPERIENCE
3-5 years purchasing experience
2 years negotiating contracts
Negotiating skills essential
Auditing and technical qualifications beneficial
IT literate
Experience of purchasing tools and procedures
Preparation and evaluation of tender documentation involving group contracts.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Negotiate all Supply Chain contracts
" Negotiate contracts with raw materials, non-stock and packaging suppliers.
" Monitor quality of supplier goods
" Initiate tender documents with an aim of securing best supplier rates
" Consolidate purchasing throughout the group and negotiate preferential prices
Responsible for raw materials and packaging purchasing budget
" Preparation of the annual raw materials packaging budget
" Apply all resources to operate within the budget, monitoring performance
" Ensure weekly and periodic expenditure is accurately recorded in the business system
" Report on KPI's within raw materials and purchasing departments
" Preparation of a period report detailing performance against budget
" Investigate procurement saving opportunities across group activities e.g. Stock holding, agencies, stationary, vehicles etc- advise and negotiate rates
Input into the management, direction and work output of others with purchasing requirements and responsibilities
" Liaise with other key departments to plan and develop NPD
" Liaise with marketing on artwork development costing s and deadlines
" Liaise with operations on production requirements with regards to development, materials costings and deadlines
" Convert sales forecast into demands for raw materials and packaging lines
" In conjunction with the technical department review systems for measuring product quality
Source, and select suitable suppliers ensuring minimum standards are achieved
" Develop systems procedures for searching out new suppliers, contracting supply and maintain market awareness
Provide procurement evaluation and development information to other departments
" Provide market knowledge and purchasing responsibilities, identifying any purchasing resources required
" Review and develop materials ordering systems
" Review product specifications and implement cost savings
Key Skills:
Knowledge and Experience
" Able to demonstrate a full understanding of Purchasing / Procurement systems
" Experience working in a Purchasing / Procurement environment within the food manufacturing industrial (fresh, chilled FMCG an advantage). 3-5 years purchasing experience
" Able to demonstrate an understanding of budgets and cost management, along with KPI awareness 2 years experience of negotiating contracts
" Fully knowledgeable of legislative requirements relating to purchasing of Raw Materials and Packaging.

Experience in an FMCG environment and good working knowledge of ERP systems is essential. Communication and IT skills are important. The ability to plan workloads efficiently and provide forecast information as well as having experience in placing orders for raw materials and packaging with suppliers is key as these tasks will form part of your day to day work. You will also manage stock, provide support to sales and all other related tasks.
Arrange prices & commodity contracts against forecast & negotiating payment terms.
• Planning of production process & 3 packing lines in 200 tonne/wk factory.
• Call offs from contracts; spot buying & transfers from external storage to meet plan.
• Packaging management: Buying; artwork development and weekly stock analysis.
• Planning; purchasing; stock control; BOM maintenance & query resolution via Movex.
• Migration of £20m business due to major new customer; SKU rationalisation project.
